How Improve International stepped up dental training with GAIA’s Prosthodontic biomodels.

The Challenge: Closing the Training Gap in Veterinary Prosthodontics

Prosthodontic procedures in veterinary dentistry require precision, patience, and hands-on experience. But traditionally, there’s a major training roadblock—the time gap between taking impressions and fitting the final prosthetic crown. This delay often means that students don’t get to practice the full procedure in one session, limiting their ability to gain real-time, end-to-end experience.

Improve Veterinary Education recognised this issue in their Advanced Certificate in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery, and they needed a solution that would allow their students to train without waiting days for prosthetic fabrication.

It sounded like a perfect challenge!

The Solution: A Custom Prosthodontic Biomodel by GAIA Biomodels

We designed a bespoke biomodel that allowed students to complete the entire prosthodontic process—from impression-taking to crown cementation—all in a single session. This revolutionary approach gave veterinarians a fully immersive, hands-on learning experience, accelerating their skill development and confidence in performing these procedures on real patients.

    Why This Changed the Game

✅ Full-Process Training in One Session â€“ No more waiting between steps—students could practice start to finish in real time.
✅ More Hands-On Learning â€“ Increased practical exposure, helping students refine their technique with immediate feedback.
✅ Better Skill Retention â€“ By completing the full procedure in one go, students gained deeper understanding and muscle memory.
✅ Stronger Future Applications â€“ By training under realistic conditions, vets left the session feeling ready to apply these techniques in clinical practice.

    The Results: Game-Changing Feedback & Next-Level Innovation

The response? Incredible. ðŸŒŸ Participants and instructors were blown away by how much this model enhanced their learning experience.

We didn’t stop there. The team at Improve Veterinary Education shared invaluable insights and ideas, inspiring us to push the boundaries even further. That’s why we’re already working on Version 2.0, which will bring even more realism and advanced features to prosthodontic training.

  • How Cetra is transforming Veterinary Consultations with GAIA’s virtual anatomy

How Cetra is transforming Veterinary Consultations with GAIA’s virtual anatomy

In the world of veterinary medicine, communication is everything. A vet can have all the knowledge in the world, but if they can’t convey it to pet owners in a way that’s clear, digestible, and visually engaging—well, that’s where the gap forms.

Enter Cetra, a platform dedicated to enhancing client education with evidence-based resources. But there was a missing piece: visualisation.

That’s where GAIA Biomodels stepped in.

The Problem: The Knowledge Gap in Vet Consultations

Most vet consultations last about 10-15 minutes, but the amount of critical medical information that needs to be communicated in that time is massive. Studies show that 80% of medical information is forgotten immediately after a consultation. This leads to pet owners turning to unreliable sources, misunderstanding their pet’s condition, and ultimately making poor treatment decisions.

Cetra saw this problem firsthand. They needed a way to make veterinary explanations more engaging, easier to understand, and memorable—so that pet owners could make informed decisions without second-guessing their vet or turning to Google.

    The Solution: GAIA’s 3D Models

By partnering with GAIA Biomodels, Cetra integrated high-resolution, anatomically precise 3D models into their platform. These models, created from real CT scans, allowed vets to visually demonstrate conditions, procedures, and anatomical structures to pet owners in real-time. Instead of relying on sketches or verbal descriptions, they could now rotate, zoom, and interact with realistic models, making explanations crystal clear.

    Why This Changed the Game

✅ Increased Pet Owner Understanding â€“ Instead of vague descriptions, owners now see what’s happening inside their pet’s body.
✅ Better Compliance with Treatment Plans â€“ When owners truly understand the issue, they’re far more likely to follow through with treatments.
✅ Reduced Anxiety & Improved Trust â€“ Seeing a clear visual of their pet’s condition helps owners feel informed and in control.
✅ Fewer Misconceptions & Vet-Client Disputes â€“ Less reliance on Google means fewer misunderstandings and more trust in veterinary expertise.

Enhanced Vet-Client Communication = Better Patient Outcomes

Since launching the GAIA Biomodels integration, Cetra has seen a significant boost in user engagement and positive feedback from vets and pet owners alike. The result?
    📈 More satisfied clients
📈 Stronger trust between vets and owners
📈 Better treatment outcomes for pets

  • Nyx’s Story: How 3D Surgical Planning Helped a Cat Regain Her Life

Nyx’s Story: How 3D Surgical Planning Helped a Cat Regain Her Life

Imagine not being able to open your mouth. No eating properly, no grooming, no yawning. That was Nyx’s reality when she arrived at Bristol Vet Specialists.

An old injury had left her jaw completely fused shut due to ankylosis, making even the most basic daily functions impossible. Surgery was the only way forward—but with her joints locked in place, the team had to plan every step carefully. That’s where 3D surgical planning came in.

That’s where 3D surgical planning came in.

A Complex Case That Needed a Smart Approach

Nyx’s condition wasn’t just challenging—it was the kind of once-in-a-career case that makes even the most experienced surgeons pause. Severe malocclusion, intra-articular and extra-articular ankylosis, and fused bone structures made for a tricky roadmap. The team needed more than just CT scans to plan their approach.

So, we stepped in to help. Using Nyx’s CT imaging, we built a virtual 3D model of her skull, mapping every detail of the fused joints. This wasn’t just about looking at the problem—it was about fully understanding it before even touching a scalpel.

“The ability to visualize every notch, every point of fusion—before surgery even began—was crucial in planning the approach and reducing potential complications.

From Virtual to Physical: Turning Planning into Action

Once the team had explored the virtual model, we 3D printed a physical biomodel that acted as a surgical map. This gave the surgeons something tangible—something they could hold, study, and reference in the theatre. Every fused joint, every structural change, was there in their hands.

The surgery itself was intense. The team performed a zygomectomy and coronoidectomy, removing sections of bone to free Nyx’s jaw. Adding to the challenge was her airway management—since she couldn’t open her mouth, the anaesthesia team had to use endoscopy-guided intubation, a technique that required pinpoint precision.

    The Moment That Changed Everything

By the end of the procedure, Nyx’s mouth—previously locked at just 1cm—could now open up to 4cm. That’s life-changing for her. She can eat properly, groom herself, and just be a normal cat again.

A post-op CT confirmed the success of the procedure, and while she still has some recovery ahead, the hardest part is behind her.

    Why This Matters

Cases like Nyx’s prove just how powerful 3D surgical planning can be. These tools don’t just help visualize a problem—they help surgeons execute faster, reduce risk, and make better decisions in the OR.

At GAIA Biomodels, we’re not just making models. We’re helping brilliant veterinary teams like Bristol Vet Specialists tackle their toughest cases with confidence.
